Walking on Water: “Do You Trust the Call?”

Matthew 14:22-33, NRSVUE

The story of Jesus walking on water is a captivating one, rich in metaphor and lessons that resonate deeply with many of us, no matter where we are on our spiritual journey. As a recently ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, I find myself continuously reflecting on the emotions, doubts, and affirmations in this passage.

The account begins with the disciples in a boat, battered by the waves, far from land, and working against the wind. Then, in the early morning darkness, they see a figure walking on the water towards them. The initial reaction? Fear. They think it’s a ghost. But Jesus immediately reassures them, saying, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter, ever impulsive and wanting to be close to Jesus, responds, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus invites him with a single word: “Come.” And Peter steps out.

In this story, I see a reflection of my own journey to ordination. I felt the call, but like Peter, I had doubts. I wondered, “Is this truly what God wants for me? Can I really walk this path?”

But here’s the question that I believe this passage poses for all of us, ordained or not:

When we hear the call, and when we take that bold step of faith, can we keep our eyes on Jesus amidst the storm?

Peter starts out strong. He’s walking on water! But when he notices the wind, he becomes frightened and starts to sink. Jesus reaches out immediately and catches him, gently chiding, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Isn’t that a reflection of our own spiritual journeys? We hear the call. We step out in faith. But then, life happens. The winds blow, the waves rise, and we start to doubt. Our focus shifts from the call to the challenges.

Yet, what if we, like Peter, are just a hand’s reach away from the miraculous? What if by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on the call and promise of love, justice, and radical inclusion that the United Church of Christ upholds, we can rise above the stormy waters?

This isn’t to say the journey is easy. As a newly ordained minister, I’ve experienced my fair share of choppy waters. There are moments of doubt and moments of great affirmation. But the core lesson remains: trust in the call, keep the faith, and focus on the One who calls us.

So, I invite you, beloved community, to reflect:

  • What is God calling you to in this season of your life?
  • How do the winds and waves of life distract you from that call?
  • And most importantly, how can you keep your gaze fixed on Jesus amidst the storm?

May we all find the courage to step out of the boat, to trust in the call, and to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, even when the winds blow and the waves rise. In doing so, we might just find ourselves walking on water.

This devotional post was inspired by the journey, the calling, and the resilient faith of countless members of the United Church of Christ. Peace and blessings to you all.
