Life is a journey with many unexpected twists and turns. Several years ago, I found myself at a challenging juncture, incarcerated, disconnected, and at an all-time low. Amidst these bleak surroundings, however, a light emerged — I was found by the United Church of Christ (UCC). This spiritual encounter would not only shift my perspective on faith but also guide me towards realizing my full potential as an integral part of God’s divine tapestry.
Religion is often perceived as a limiting force, a set of stringent rules that constricts more than it liberates. However, my experience with the UCC defied this notion. Instead of prohibiting me, it became a catalyst for change, a vehicle for self-discovery, and a pathway to becoming who God created me to be.
The United Church of Christ stood as a stark contrast to my conservative upbringing. It offered an expansive view of faith, a view rooted in inclusivity, love, and acceptance. The UCC held open its doors to everyone, regardless of their past, their identities, their struggles. They embraced me fully, and this sense of belonging and acceptance was, to say the least, transformative.
Being a part of the UCC helped me realize that faith is not about excluding or judging; it’s about welcoming and understanding. It’s not about conforming to a rigid set of rules; it’s about engaging with the divine truth that encourages growth, empathy, and unity. And it’s not about fear; it’s about love— the pure, unconditional love that God has for all of His creation.
This open, welcoming approach to faith pushed me to question, to reflect, and to grow. It allowed me to break free from the constraints of my past and embrace a more compassionate, understanding version of myself. Each sermon I attended, every scripture I read, and every prayer I offered became a step in my journey of transformation.
The UCC challenged me, but in a way that spurred growth rather than elicited fear. It encouraged me to look beyond my past, my mistakes, and see the potential that lay ahead. With each day, I felt more in tune with the divine rhythm of life, more connected to the divine tapestry of creation.
Looking back, I realize that my religion does not prohibit me; it allows me to fully unfold into the person God created me to be. The United Church of Christ found me in my darkest hour and guided me towards a brighter, more inclusive, and accepting path of faith. Today, as I stand as a testament to this transformative journey, I am more than a part of a congregation; I am an evolving part of God’s divine tapestry, continuously woven and shaped by His love, grace, and wisdom.
For anyone feeling lost or ostracized, remember that there is always a place for you in God’s grand design. There is a faith that will embrace you for who you are, a faith that will guide you towards becoming who God intended you to be. I found that faith in the United Church of Christ. It did not limit me; it freed me. It did not cage me; it gave me wings. It did not prohibit me; it empowered me to fully become a part of God’s divine tapestry.
